When trying to teach your child to swim, it is important that you don’t scare the child while in the water. The child needs to feel comfortable and at ease. Should he be afraid of the water, he is going to less likely be relaxed which will make it easier for him to swim. You need to start off slow and not just throw your child into the water, don’t make him put his face under water if he is not comfortable doing so.
Your child needs to know that swimming is fun and it is a play experience and not a life or death situation. Perhaps having your child wear arm floaties for the first few lessons that you are giving him will help him to be more confident.
There are many places that offer swimming lessons to children, with some children it may be more beneficial for them to learn from someone else other than their parents. They may be less distracted and fell less pressure coming from someone else. By using a professional that has taught other children how to swim, it just may take some of the pressure off of mom and dad also.
